How To Make Skype a Portable App

January 25th, 2009 at 03:11pm Under Internet+ Software

1.  The first step is to make the folder on your USB stick.   So call it whatever you want.  Let’s call it “Portable Skype” for example.

2.  Now go to the installed Skype app on your computer (normally located at C:\Program Files\Skype) and look for a file called Skype.exe

Right-click and copy that file.   Do not move it anywhere.   Just right-click and copy.

3.  Now go to the “Portable Skype” folder and insert that copied “Skype.exe” file into the “Portable Skype” folder.

4.  In the “Portable Skype” folder, make a new sub-folder called data

5.  Inside the “data” folder, make a new text document using Notepad or something similar.   Name the file skype.bat

6.  Open this file up and insert the following line : skype.exe /datapath:”Data” /removable

7. Save and close the file.   That’s it.  You’re done.  You now have a portable version of Skype.

Enjoy

GSplit - split large files into a set of smaller pieces

January 4th, 2009 at 03:49pm Under Software

This application is a free reliable file splitter that lets you split your large files (like Self-Extracting archives, Zip archives, disk images, multimedia, music, video, backup, image, archive, log, large text, document files…) into a set of smaller files called pieces.

These pieces are easier to:

* copy to floppy or any removable media disks.
* distribute over the Internet, networks.
* send by email (forget attached file size restrictions imposed by some ISP, pop3, SMTP and other e-mail servers).
* archive to CD, DVD, USB Flash drive and strick, Zip disk, and any other storage device.
* upload to host accounts, file delivery services, online file hosting sites… that have restrictions on file sizes.
* share with friends, colleagues or other users through networks and the Internet.
* exchange using Instant Messaging clients or Instant Messenger programs…

After splitting the file, it creates an executable file which unites all the files into it’s original form. The person on the other end doesn’t need to have GSplit in order to run the file and it works like a charm.

January 3rd, 2009 at 07:19pm Under Software

Launchy is the most efficient way to open files, folders, websites, and
programs on your computer. Nobody likes to hunt through the start menu to
find an application, just to find that the application is hidden under some
obscure folder named after a company you have never heard of! Instead,
Launchy is a smart search program which tries to guess which program or file
you are looking for and will launch it when you hit the enter key. It is only
visible when you hit the alt+space key combination; otherwise it hides in the
background. Once you have used it for a few days, it becomes an indispensable
utility for your computer. And it’s free! Here are some tips that we use and recommend.

  • Search Google
    • Type in google, then tab, then your search query and press enter
  • Check the Weather
    • Type in Weather, then tab, then your zip code or city, state and press enter
  • Search other sites
    • Other sites you can search include wikipedia, msn, yahoo, amazon, netflix, imdb, and more.
  • Browse your computer
    • Type in c:, then tab, then a folder or file, hit tab, and continue
  • The Launchy Calculator
    • Did you know that Launchy has a built in calculator? Type in some algebra and see what happens!
  • Index your Bookmarks & Folders
    • Directory: C:\Documents and Settings\user\Favorites
    • File Type: .url
  • Index your Music
    • Directory: My Documents
    • File Types: .mp3 .aac .ogg
  • Index your Pictures

Google`s Chrome ABOUT tricks

December 14th, 2008 at 05:16pm Under Software

1. about:version - Google Chrome shows the version number the browser

2. about:plugins - the list of plug-ins that are available in Google Chrome: Shockwave Flash, RealPlayer etc.

3. about:cache - a list of all the web pages cached by Google Chrome. The browser doesn’t have an option to limit the cache’s size, so it’s recommended to regularly empty the cache.

4. about:memory - this pages compares the memory used by all the active browsers and by Google Chrome’s tabs.

5. about:stats - a list of internal counters and timers that has a funny subtitle “Shhh! This page is secret!”.

6. about:histograms - a list of histograms for Google Chrome’s internal metrics.

7. about:dns - Google Chrome prefetches the DNS records for 10 frequently visited hostnames. This feature can be disabled in Options > Under the Hood by unchecking “Use DNS pre-fetching to improve page load performance”.

8. about:network - this page could be used for I/O tracking and it’s a partial replacement for the Live HTTP Headers extension. Click on “Start I/O tracking”, open a web page in a new tab and you’ll get a list of all the images, scripts and objects loaded from that web page.

9. about:crash - crash the active tab. Google Chrome displays the “sad tab” image, followed by this message: “Something went wrong while displaying this webpage. To continue, press Reload or go to another page”.

10. about:hang - type this in the address bar of a tab when there’s already an active web page to hang the process (this means that the process no longer accepts any signal, but it’s still running). The other tabs will continue to work and the active tab can be closed.

11. about:internets - this is an Easter egg that references two popular Internet memes: Internets and Series of tubes. Google Chrome embeds the 3D Pipes screensaver from Windows, so you’ll see it only if you have the file sspipes.scr in C:\Windows\System32.

Asterisk Logger v1.04 - Reveal/recover lost password behind asterisks

December 14th, 2008 at 04:55pm Under Software

This utility can reveal the passwords stored behind the asterisks in standard password text-boxes.
Asterisk Logger is a successor of AsterWin utility. It reveals the asterisk passwords in the same way as AsterWin utility, but it has some advantages over the previous utility:

  • You don’t have to press a button in order to reveal the asterisk passwords. Whenever a new window containing a password box is opened, Asterisk Logger automatically reveals the password inside the password-box, and add a record to passwords list in the main window of Asterisk Logger.
  • Asterisk Logger displays additional information about the revealed password: The date/time that the password was revealed, the name of the application that contains the revealed password box, and the executable file of the application.
  • Asterisk Logger allows you the save the passwords to HTML file and to 3 types of text files.
